Our focus on teamwork and quality, with a product-minded and test-driven approach, enables us to go far together. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical design and development of new product features and platform capabilities in collaboration with product managers and engineers, following an acceptance test-driven development / BDD approach
  • Drive improvements to our engineering practices
  • Mentor, coach, and support junior engineers

  • Knowledge of different database and state persistence options including RDBMSs and caches.

  • Understanding of what makes a well-designed cloud-native microservice, including frameworks used and service responsibilities.

  • Experience building scalable, performant, and reliable distributed systems using a microservices-based architecture.

  • Experience applying agile and lean principles.

  • Ability to learn new skills to work across the entirety of our tech stack.

The following skills would be advantageous

  • Experience migrating from a monolithic architecture to microservices
  • Experience working with React/Angular/Vue or Node.js applications
  • Experience defining Service Level Objectives and keeping within error budget

What do we offer?

  • A friendly and vibrant working culture and people who are always keen to help each other
  • A place for you to grow and develop
  • Generous pension scheme, life and health insurance and a range of other employee benefits
  • Great opportunity to work with one of the rising stars in FinTech

Portabl Logo
Principal Front-End Engineer
Portabl
Remote (United States)
$170,000 to $190,000 a year
June 2022

Job Description

About the role

  • Role: Principal Front End Engineer
  • Pay: $170k-$190k
  • Equity: 0.5% – 1.25%

What we’re doing

We believe that people should own their financial identity and use it with any app or service they want, whenever they need. Accessing, maintaining, and mixing-and-matching Web2 and Web3 services must be easier, more transparent, and more trustworthy.

Portabl enables consumers to simplify how their own users verify, organize, and sync identity data and documents across their whole financial lives. The goal: universal financial identity for all.

By leaning on new standards in verifiable credentials and decentralized identity we will deliver a portable identity that works for anyone. Getting this right means we can simplify and automate many parts of the identity/ KYC/ compliance stack that currently prevent the financial system from being more cost-effective, more inclusive, and more equitable.

Who we are

We’re a small team comprised of Web2 and Web3 veterans hailing from Consensys, Paypal, US Mobile, Ava Labs, and other corners of the fintech and regtech universe who share a common goal of making identity more standardized, composable, and easier to use across the financial services space.

We recognize that transforming digital identity has many challenges, which is why we value trust, curiosity, empathy, and craft. If this sounds like you, and you're excited by the idea of getting in at the ground level and building the infrastructure for the future of the financial identity, we would love to hear from you!

We’ve raised funds from top-tier early stage investors in both Web2 and Web3 including...

  • Harlem Capital
  • 6th Man Ventures
  • Bessemer Venture Partners
  • Dorm Room Fund
  • PearVC

We are 1 of only 5 companies recognized by Plaid in 2022 as part of the next generation of startups shaping the future of financial access. We are thrilled to be participating in Plaid’s 6-month Accelerate Program

What you'll do

As our lead front-end engineer, you will join a team that’s using the latest developments in decentralized identity to make financial access more transparent and more trustworthy for people using both traditional financial institutions and DeFi providers.

You will...

  • play a critical role in building cross-platform experiences on top of Portabl’s APIs, help own our product engineering, and shape the development process and roadmap.
  • create trustworthy, reliable user experiences for millions of consumers by building interfaces that are simple and easy to comprehend.
  • build, test, and ship new user-facing code with modern tools (including reusable components and frontend libraries).
  • translate designs, wireframes, and business requirements into high-quality experiences.
  • grow a best-in-class engineering group distributed largely in the US
  • collect and analyze product feedback to refine our growth and expansion
  • articulate a long term technical direction and vision for maintaining and scaling our mobile and web platforms.
  • collaborate with our founders, designers, engineers, interns, and external partners.
  • publish robust public documentation and support efforts to build a developer community

We are an early-stage startup, so we're looking for someone who is comfortable with ambiguity and has a strong desire to work both autonomously and in groups. You will have a ton of say and impact on the direction and future of our company and will help solve some of the biggest challenges we’ll face.

🤔 Not sure this fits you but want to talk? That’s okay! We prioritize potential and willingness to learn above all, so if you don’t think that you fit one of our listings, we encourage you to apply anyway and your application will be considered fairly.

Why you should join us

  1. As an early core team member, you’ll play a key role in helping shape our vision, culture, and engineering practices.
  2. You will help create new standards that have a direct, positive impact on web2 and web3 consumers.
  3. You can leave the system better than you found it—fixing identity has a direct impact on improving financial access for those who need it most.
  4. The market opportunity is massive: estimates put the financial ID market size between $30B and $100B

Requirements

What you bring

  • 5+ years of engineering experience building cross-platform mobile apps
  • Proficiency at architecting best-in-class mobile solutions using React Native and TypeScript
  • A track record of building, communicating, and implementing engineering and development policies, practices, standards, and security measures to ensure effective and consistent operations.
  • Past experience as a frontend or full-stack engineer at a fintech, security, or crypto startup
  • Familiarity with latest trends and best practices around performance, security, and usability/accessibility
  • Strong communication skills and knack for conveying complex concepts simply
  • Deep interest or hands-on experience in the web3/crypto ecosystem—we’d love to know a few things that excite you in the space
  • An appetite to be active in developer communities (e.g. stack overflow, github, discord, reddit, meetups, etc)
  • Deep interest in decentralized identity standards, e.g. verifiable credentials, zcap-ld, BBS+, etc.—you’ll learn a lot with the team, if this is newish for you, that’s okay!
  • Strong communication skills and knack for conveying complex concepts simply

Bonus Points!

  • Experience engineering native modules using Swift, Kotlin, and/or Objective C
  • Experience building web-based dashboards and admin tools
  • Prior work shipping B2C products in the finance, crypto, or security space
  • Know Your Customer (KYC) or Identity Verification (IDV) industry knowledge or experience

Benefits

  • Competitive mix of salary and equity compensation for a company of our stage and size and plan to size and scale our packages transparently as we grow.
  • Company-subsidized health, vision, and dental insurance via Justworks
  • 401k with matching via Guideline
  • Unlimited PTO: Take time when you need it
  • Work-from-home setup stipend: when you join, we’ll subsidize what you need to set up to succeed up to $1000
